Chapter 27
Ponyets:Are you Eskel Gorov? You seem lively for someone who was imprisoned for 30 days. I am Limmar Ponyets, a merchant trader.
Gorov: I owe you. Being executed for illegal entry on Ascon Star, and then being saved by a merchant.
Ponyets:You’re quite a clumsy spy. I just helped you reluctantly. I put my life on the line. I was also worried about not meeting my usual quota.
Gorov:Can you tell me how you were saved?
Ponyets: It’s simple. I just used my usual method. I only turned ordinary scrap metal into gold. It took me two to three days to make the conversion device. Officials often talk about “loyalty” to the state or the landlady, but that’s all nonsense from the start. In reality, it’s all about “money.” Personal gain takes precedence. Especially when it comes to gold, there’s no way to deceive.
Gorov:What! You turned scrap metal into gold!
Ponyets:It was just a facade. It would be exposed in two days. Before that, I just had to run away. Thanks to that, I was able to achieve the quota for selling tin.
Gorov:Merchants really use dirty tricks!
You don’t have a shred of morality, do you?
Ponyets:Is that something a saved person like you should say?You may be an elite government official, but you don’t understand Hardin’s feelings at all. His motto is “Never let moral principles interfere with doing the right thing.”
My real quota starts now! You haven’t achieved the quota of a spy, have you?
Gorov: Real quota?
Ponyets:I will return to Terminus now and sell the requested items. I can see Arcadia’s farm. A purple world. With that extract, I can buy as much gold as I want. And I can also picture the smile of Arcadia’s daughter, Althea.
