Main Text

Deep within the Federation Encyclopedia Compilation Library.
In a small reading room temporarily sealed for renovation preparations,
Meter was choosing his words with care.
Sitting across from him was Hannis Izal.
It was still—
before all decisions were formally conveyed to us,
a brief interval of silence and uncertainty.
Meter
“…Mr. Hannis.
About the day Ron Symphar visited the Aporiana estate.”
Hannis lifted his gaze.
“The day I was away.”
“Yes.
Just before the reconstruction plan of the Federation Encyclopedia Compilation Library
was officially communicated to us.”
Meter continued quietly.
“Ron first—
formally informed me of Orin Barr’s death.”
At that moment, the faint movement vanished from Hannis’s expression.
“…I see.”
“Yes.
It wasn’t rumor or fragmented information.
It was a confirmed notification.”
Ron Symphar delivered only facts, without emotion.
Orin Barr no longer existed within this galaxy.
It was neither an accident nor a purge.
It was an irreversible departure accompanying the completion of a plan.
“The way he conveyed it…
was almost too detached.”
Meter lowered his eyes, recalling the moment.
Meter
“To be honest,
I thought he was cold.”
Hannis neither affirmed nor denied it.
“But that wasn’t all he came to say.”
“No.”
Meter nodded.
“Ron said that the ‘two completions’ required
information about Aporiana Perigaul,
and information about me.”
Hannis’s brow moved slightly.
“And the reason?”
“Because his scientific framework
does not include the Chrono-Flower Theory.”
Ron Symphar possessed unmatched talent in equations and devices.
However, the idea that time blooms at critical thresholds—
that history possesses points of reversal—
was not part of his theoretical domain.
“So he needed not the theory itself,
but those who had come into contact with it.”
That was how Meter explained it.
Meter
“And he acted immediately.”
“Fast.”
“Yes.
Before the conversation at the estate even ended.”
Ron contacted Consuüm on the spot—
the Galactic Tuning Authority,
specifically its central figure,
The First Tuner.
“Planet Helios.
He had already determined that the Anti-Quantum Axiom information chip
was indispensable for supplementing the Chrono-Flower Theory.”
Hannis exhaled quietly.
“…Helios.”
“Yes.
Through the Tuner’s mediation,
the information and the chip
reached us in an extraordinarily short time.”
Meter paused there.
Meter
“However—
what he said next
made me strongly resent him.”
“What did he say?”
“He looked at me and said this.”
Meter gave a faint, bitter smile.
“‘You are an excellent tick-tack.’”
The corner of Hannis’s mouth twisted slightly.
“…I see.”
“Yes.
Frankly, it made me angry.”
Tick-tack.
A gear.
A mechanism meant only to mark time.
It sounded as if I were being treated not as a human,
but as a device.
“I told you about that later, didn’t I?”
“Yes.
I heard.”
Hannis answered briefly, then continued.
Hannis
“But, Meter.
Ron is from Planet Sympasion.”
“…His homeworld?”
“Yes.
On that planet, ‘tick-tack’ isn’t an insult.”
He went on.
“It’s the highest form of praise—
for one who keeps civilization’s time precise,
without distorting it.”
Meter caught his breath.
“I realized later.
That word—
was not disregard,
but expectation.”
Ron Symphar had not seen Meter as a usable component.
Rather, he saw him as someone capable of assuming
a role he himself could not.
“Still,”
Meter added quietly,
“at first, it put him at a disadvantage.”
Hannis fell silent for a moment.
Then, softly:
Hannis
“…That’s why
Ron was able to prepare in advance.”
“Yes.”
“And that’s why
I could choose a temporary withdrawal.”
Meter nodded deeply.
A few days later,
the reconstruction policy of the Federation Encyclopedia Compilation Library
was formally conveyed to us.
At the same time,
beneath the surface,
the construction of the starship Nadir was already underway.
Ron Symphar went to Neo-Ether.
Hannis Izal descended underground.
Meter does not yet know
that he himself,
as a “keeper of time,”
will board the Nadir.
