Text
Deep within the Library of Compilation of the Galactic Encyclopedia.
In a small reading room, temporarily sealed for renovation preparations,
Meter chose his words with care.
Seated across from him was Hannis Izal.
It was still—
a brief interval of emptiness,
before all decisions were officially conveyed to us.
Meter
“…Mr. Hannis.
About the day Ron Symphar visited the Aporian residence.”
Hannis raised his eyes.
“The day I was away.”
“Yes.
Just before the reconfiguration plan
for the Federal Encyclopedia Compilation Library
was officially announced to us.”
Meter continued quietly.
“Ron first—
formally informed me
of Orin Barr’s death.”
At that moment,
the slightest movement vanished from Hannis’s face.
“…I see.”
“Yes.
They were neither rumors nor fragmented information.
It was a confirmed notification.”
Ron Symphar
conveyed only facts, without emotion.
Orin Barr no longer existed in this galaxy.
It was neither an accident nor a purge.
It was an irreversible departure
following the completion of a plan.
“The way he said it…
was far too impersonal.”
Meter lowered his gaze, as if recalling that moment.
Meter
“To be honest,
I found him cruel.”
Hannis neither affirmed nor denied it.
“But that wasn’t the only reason he came.”
“No.”
Meter nodded.
“Ron said that for the ‘two completions,’
information regarding Aporiana Perigaul
and information regarding myself
were both necessary.”
Hannis’s eyebrow moved slightly.
“And the reason?”
“Because within his scientific framework,
the Chrono-Flower Theory does not exist.”
Ron Symphar
was a man of unparalleled talent
in formulas and devices.
But—
the idea that time reaches a critical threshold and ‘blooms,’
the concept that history possesses points of reversal,
lay outside his theoretical domain.
“That is why he did not need the theory itself,
but the humans who had come into contact with it.”
So Miter explained.
Meter
“And he acted immediately.”
“Fast.”
“Yes.
He visited the residence
before the conversation had even ended.”
On the spot,
Ron contacted the Consuüm—
the Galactic Authority of Tuning—
and at its center, the First Tuner.
“Planet Helios.
He had already determined that the information chip
containing the Anti-Quantum Law
was indispensable to completing
the Chrono-Flower Theory.”
Hannis exhaled slowly.
“…Helios.”
“Yes.
Through the Tuner’s mediation,
the information and the chip
were placed in our hands
in an extremely short time.”
Meter paused.
Meter
“However—
with his next remark,
I felt a strong aversion toward him.”
“What did he say?”
“Ron looked at me and said this.”
Meter smiled faintly, bitterly.
“‘You are an excellent tick-tock.’”
The corner of Hannis’s mouth curved slightly.
“…I see.”
“Yes.
To be honest, it angered me.”
Tick-tock.
A cog.
A mechanism for marking time.
It sounded—
as if I were not being regarded as a person,
but as a device.
“You told me about it later as well, didn’t you?”
“Yes.
I remember.”
Hannis replied briefly.
Hannis
“But, Meter.
Ron comes from the planet Sympasion.”
“…His home planet?”
“That’s right.
On that world, ‘tick-tock’
is not an insult.”
Hannis continued.
“It is the highest praise
for one who marks the time of civilization precisely,
without ever letting it go astray.”
Meter held his breath.
“I only understood it later.
Those words—
were not contempt,
but expectation.”
Ron Symphar
did not see Meter as a mere usable component.
Rather,
he saw him as someone capable of assuming a role
that he himself could not bear.
“Even so,
at first it worked against him.”
So Meter added.
Hannis remained silent for a while.
Then he spoke softly.
Hannis
“…That is why
Ron was able to prepare in advance.”
“Yes.”
“And that is why
I was able to choose a temporary retreat.”
Meter nodded deeply.
A few days later,
the reconfiguration policy
of the Federal Encyclopedia Compilation Library
was officially conveyed to us.
At the same time,
beneath the surface,
the construction of the new Nadir Ship was underway.
Ron Symphar headed for the Neo-Aether.
Hannis Izal descended underground.
Meter does not yet know
that he himself,
as “the one who marks time,”
will board the Nadir Ship.
